Acute skin irritation test in rabbit

Aim:

The main objective of this study is to reveal the possible irritant effects and their reversibility of test item on rabbit’s skin after a single application.

Species:

Preferably albino rabbit.

Design:

In an initial step the test will be performed in one animal. If no well-defined corrosive response is observed in the initial test, two addition animals are tested.

The test item is applied to the intact skin. The untreated skin of each animal serves as control. Animals are examined and scored for signs of erythema and edema including reversibility of findings for each application site at defined time intervals.

Outcome:

The dermal irritation scores are evaluated according to the scoring system by Draize (1959) and OECD 404 (together with all observations during the study).
